Be it shopping on Main Street, exploring one of the many historic sites or
simply relaxing at the beach, Southampton has it all. This village was the first
English settlement in the state of New York, and today blends charm and old-world
ambiance with nearby New York City's flair for the fashionable. Seven miles
of beachfront provide space for sunbathing and picnicking, while the waters
reveal a wealth of opportunities for boating and fishing. Shinnecock Bay is
well known as a scuba diving and windsurfing destination, providing a venue
for some of the best aquatic activities in the state. The Parrish Art Museum
is one of Southampton's many historical attractions, having survived since 1898
to house an extensive collection of American art today. Southampton also boasts
the oldest private 18-hole golf course in the United States, Shinnecock Golf
Club, which was the site of the 1986 and 1995 U.S. Open Golf Championships.
